Join Us for the International Day of Potato
May 30th 2026 @ Hanna Roses Farm, Thika
The third observance of the International Day of Potato will be on 30th May 2026, with the theme of Shaping history, feeding the future. The theme acknowledges the potato’s deep historical and cultural significance and its evolving role in today's global agrifood systems.
From its domestication in the Andes, to its global spread through the Columbian Exchange and its involvement in key historical events such as the Irish Potato Famine, the potato has shaped civilizations and diets across continents over several millennia.
Potatoes are the World's Third Most Consumed Food Crop
On 30th May, we spotlight the potato, Solanum tuberosum (L.) – a crop regularly consumed by billions of people. Potatoes are a key crop across diverse farming systems globally, ranging from smallholders producing diverse heirloom varieties like the Shangi by hand in Kenya, to vast commercial, mechanized farms in different continents. Potatoes contribute to the food security and nutrition as well as and livelihoods and employment of people in rural and urban areas the world over.
Composition: Potatoes are about 80% water and 20% solid
Calories: A standard potato contains about 87 calories, 1.9 grams of protein, and 1.8 grams of fiber.
Health Benefits: They may aid in reducing high blood pressure, enhancing immunity, and supporting digestive health.
